The Landing Eatery & Pub is a 10,000-square-foot, locally owned sports bar and grill on West Kansas Street in Liberty, in business since 1991 and run by Michael DePalma and his wife. It is the Northland’s archetype of the big neighborhood variety bar: more than 60 televisions and every sports package, a covered patio heated in winter and a second open-air one, live music four or five nights a week, Sunday breakfast, weekday lunch specials, and an 80-plus-item scratch menu whose calling cards are the dry-rubbed wings, hand-breaded chicken tenders and a giant hand-cut pork tenderloin sandwich “voted best in the Northland.”
Description
The Landing sits on the commercial strip of West Kansas Street on Liberty’s west side, near the Hunan Garden and Longboards storefronts at 1170–1173 W. Kansas.1 The building is large — the pub claims more than 10,000 square feet, a big dining room, a covered outdoor patio heated in winter and an open-air patio where smoking is prohibited, with semi-private areas that can be reserved for parties.2 More than 60 HDTVs carry every subscribed sports package, and the bar streams local high-school games.2 The events calendar is dense: as of late August 2026 it listed a different act nearly every Thursday through Sunday — Sunny Side Down, Kim & Derek, Mikey Needleman, Marshall Holles, Mudflap Mafia, Brody Buster and others — with 8 p.m. starts on weekends and 6 p.m. on Sundays.3
The menu runs past 80 items.2 The house signatures are dry-rubbed wings (“allow 30 minutes cooking time please, this is not fast food!!”), the Ben Maller chicken-finger basket, a grilled salmon dinner, and the Giant Pork Tenderloin, “our famous hand cut, hand breaded pork loin.”4 Around them sit fried pickles, Bavarian pretzels named for 96.5 The Fan host Bob Fescoe, buffalo rangoon, Gio’s Italian nachos with Scimeca’s sausage, a dozen-plus burgers (the Landing Burger with a fried egg on Texas toast, a Black & Blue, a Pig Burger, a smashburger), a Northland Cubano, a Reuben, a French dip, a KC strip, Cajun chicken pasta and three macs and cheese, plus B.Y.O. and specialty pizzas.54 A gluten-friendly menu, a beer list with patio drafts (Boulevard, Blue Moon, Angry Orchard, domestic happy-hour taps) and a daily-special rotation — Tuesday tenderloin, Wednesday steak night, Thursday burger value meal, Friday chicken-fried chicken and salmon — round it out.67 Sunday brings a breakfast menu: the Liberty Standard, biscuits and gravy, a Breakfast Mess and breakfast tacos, alongside a “pancake breakfast shot” of Jameson, butterscotch schnapps, orange juice and bacon.8
Ownership and history
The Landing opened in 1991 and describes itself as “THE ORIGINAL Variety Bar” of that year and “locally owned and operated for over 30 years.”92 Liberty’s tourism office, in a video around the pub’s 25th anniversary, called it “an icon in Liberty for 25 years” and a “family-grown neighborhood bar.”10
The owner is Michael DePalma, who runs the pub with his wife; KSHB identified the couple as owners in 2017, and quoted DePalma as owner again in 2020.1112 Whether the DePalmas founded the pub in 1991 or bought it later is not established in any retrievable source; DePalma’s LinkedIn profile lists him as president of “The Landing Eatery and Brew Pub” and, more recently, as COO of Brooksider Sports Bar and Grill, which may be a second venture or a later role.13
Two news moments bracket the pub’s recent history. In 2017 a Lyft driver was shot on the patio early one Sunday morning; DePalma told KSHB that employees who witnessed it had “pictures they’ll never get out of their minds” and offered the driver support.11 In 2020, as Clay County eased COVID-19 restrictions, DePalma said the pub would return to 1:30 a.m. closes Thursday through Saturday while keeping occupancy limited: “We’re blessed by the folks that come in. Even during the pandemic when we were shut down completely, curbside only, they took care of our staff, tipped them generously.”12
