Thelma’s Kitchen is Kansas City’s pay-it-forward community cafe on Troost Avenue — operated by Reconciliation Services, honoring the legacy of its late founder Thelma Altschul. No one is turned away based on ability to pay. Reopened July 2024 after a pandemic closure.
Description
Thelma’s Kitchen is Kansas City’s original pay-it-forward community cafe — a restaurant on Troost Avenue where nobody is turned away based on inability to pay. The cafe is operated by Reconciliation Services, a KC nonprofit, and is named for the organization’s late founder Thelma Altschul, who built Reconciliation Services into a hub for anti-poverty work in Midtown before her death in 2012. Father Justin Mathews and Jodi Mathews run the day-to-day operation; the model lets customers who can afford to pay it forward cover the cost of a meal for a neighbor who cannot. The kitchen first opened around 2018–2019, closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, and held a grand reopening on July 22, 2024. Lunch service runs Monday through Friday. The concept is built around the idea that dignity at the table should not depend on a wallet.
Tier classification
Tier 2 provisional — KC-based nonprofit, civic institution. Thelma’s Kitchen is operated by Reconciliation Services, a Kansas City-based nonprofit organization with deep roots in the Midtown/Troost corridor. The operation is not a privately owned business but a mission-driven social enterprise; the tier system applies imperfectly here. Father Justin Mathews, the primary operator, has been serving the KC community through Reconciliation Services for years. “ — Father Mathews’ hometown/origin not confirmed.

Thelma’s Kitchen runs two parallel tracks: (1) a pay-what-you-can walk-in cafe, Monday–Friday 11am–2pm, with a rotating, seasonal $1–$8 tiered menu; and (2) fixed-price sandwiches available via online ordering/boxed lunch/catering at $12 each. No one is turned away for inability to pay in the cafe track.12

Sandwich box lunches typically pair a sandwich with a side salad, fruit, and a fresh-baked cookie; boxed-lunch pricing on a pay-what-you-can basis has separately been reported at $3–$11, and a soup+salad+entree to-go plate at $7 (small)/$10 (large) — confirm current combo pricing directly, since the site’s own tiers ($1–$8 items, $12 fixed sandwiches) may supersede these older figures.3
