Tin Kitchen is a family-owned Southern smokehouse at 509 Main Street, Weston, MO 64098, in the Weston historic district about 30 miles northwest of downtown Kansas City. It opened in 2014 in the former Rumpel Hardware building and is run by Sean, Barbara and Kathleen O’Malley — the same Weston family that ran O’Malley’s before that property changed hands, with Sean O’Malley working as pitmaster. The kitchen smokes pork, brisket, chicken and St. Louis-cut ribs for up to 16 hours and puts smash burgers, salmon, salads and scratch desserts alongside the barbecue. A bar room, TK2 — The Public House, carries draft beer and cocktails. Tier 1 — single-location, family-owned, no outside parent.1234

Description

Tin Kitchen occupies a Main Street storefront in the Weston historic district and takes its name from the building’s original pressed-tin ceilings and walls, which the restaurant kept when it restored the old Rumpel Hardware store. Two dining rooms and a bar room sit under that tin.1

First-party copy describes the barbecue as smoked “straight from the pit” for up to 16 hours, with pulled pork, brisket, chicken and contest-style ribs as the leads, and grilled meats and fish, Southern-style sides, salads and house desserts filling out the menu. The two first-party descriptions differ on wood: the site’s About text says pecan, while the catering menu says Missouri oak.15 The Columbia Missourian characterized the approach as Texas-style — brisket seasoned with salt and pepper — and quoted Sean O’Malley saying “We spend the most time of anything on the brisket.”3

TK2 — The Public House at Tin Kitchen is the bar side: craft beer on tap, a full bar, wine and cocktails, and televised sport. The draft and can lists lean local, carrying O’Malley’s Cream Ale and Stout and a Weston seasonal cider from Weston, plus KC Bier and Boulevard from Kansas City; the wine-by-the-glass list includes a Weston Rosé from Pirtle.12

The restaurant does not accept reservations. Two rooms — TK2 and a larger space, TK3 — can be booked for private parties at lunch Monday through Friday and for dinner on Wednesday and Thursday only, with a $100 room fee and seating for up to 50 plus 10 barstools.4

Ownership and history

The Columbia Missourian (May 19, 2022, by Alyssa Frank) reports that Sean, Barbara and Kathleen O’Malley opened Tin Kitchen in 2014, and quotes Sean O’Malley on the kitchen’s brisket work.3

The O’Malley name is a Weston hospitality lineage: per the Registry’s O’Malley’s 1842 Pub page, the O’Malley family opened the aboveground restaurant at the Weston Brewing Company site in the late 1970s and the underground pub in the 1980s, and the property was purchased by other owners in 2005. Tin Kitchen is a later, separate venture by members of that family; the frequently repeated characterization of Sean O’Malley as “formerly of O’Malley’s Irish Pub” and as Tin Kitchen’s pitmaster circulates in secondary write-ups but is **** for a first-party or dated-news confirmation. Tin Kitchen’s own private-party sheet is signed “Sean,” which is consistent but not a formal ownership statement.4

Building. First-party About copy dates the Rumpel Hardware building to 1842; the Columbia Missourian dates it to 1894. Both are reproduced here rather than reconciled — the Registry does not have a deed or National Register citation for this address this pass. **** for the building’s construction date.13

The specific month of opening (October 2014) and any founding-partner detail beyond the three named O’Malleys are ****.
