Verdigris is an upscale cocktail bar and lounge at 5245 W 116th Pl in the Park Place development in Leawood, Kansas, opened in June 2020 by the team behind the-monarch-cocktail-bar-lounge, with Brock Schulte leading the bar program at launch. The room was designed by MANICA Architecture, and both the name and the cocktail program are built on verdigris — the blue-green patina copper and brass take as they oxidise — as a figure for change and evolution. It is a sibling to the-mercury-room under the Exit Strategy ownership group. Location note: Verdigris is in Leawood, Johnson County, Kansas — not in Kansas City’s Power & Light District, as an earlier vault page incorrectly stated.
Description
Verdigris is a cocktail bar and lounge on the ground floor of the Park Place mixed-use development in Leawood, Kansas. It opened in June 2020 as the second bar from the group behind The Monarch Bar on the West Plaza, and it was conceived specifically as a Kansas-side counterpart to that Missouri-side room.12
The concept is organised around its name. Verdigris is the bright blue-green patina that forms on copper, brass, and bronze as they oxidise — the colour of the Statue of Liberty. Founding bar director Brock Schulte built the drink list around the theme of change and evolution that the patina stands for, in the same way The Monarch’s list is organised around the monarch butterfly’s migration.1 MANICA Architecture, which designed the room, describes the interior as blending 1920s luxury with 1950s postmodernism, using jewelled tones, metallic finishes, and accents of deep blue, emerald green, and gold.3
The room is arranged to put the bar itself at the centre. In pre-opening coverage Schulte said the seating, food service, and music were all deliberately kept low-key so that conversation was easy and the bartenders stayed visible: “any cocktail bar should feature the bartenders as the star of the show.”1 Schulte also stated the reason for crossing the state line: “We wanted to move to the Kansas side with Verdigris because so many bars with good cocktails on the Kansas side are still restaurant-focused. You’ll be able to get plenty of good food here, but the focus is on the drinks.”1
Food is a supporting menu of seven shareable plates rather than a full kitchen.4 The bar takes reservations through Tock for parties of two to twelve and also books private events.56 Free parking is available on the street and in the covered garage next to the building.7
Ownership and history
Verdigris was announced in February 2020 by Feast Magazine as an upscale cocktail lounge “from bar manager Brock Schulte and some of the other minds behind The Monarch Bar,” with an opening planned for late March 2020.1 That date slipped, and the bar in fact opened in June 2020 — Feast’s June 2020 openings-and-closings roundup lists it among the month’s new arrivals, describing it as “sister bar to the Plaza’s Monarch Bar” and noting that “Monarch Bar talents including Brock Schulte helped develop the menu and service model.”2 The gap between the announced and actual dates coincides with the spring 2020 pandemic shutdowns, though no source consulted states the cause directly. ****
The room was designed by MANICA Architecture, the Kansas City firm founded by David Manica; the firm lists Verdigris in its Commercial & Residential portfolio as completed in 2020, alongside The Monarch Bar and The Mercury Room.3 Manica is a Kansas City–area native and a 1994 University of Kansas School of Architecture graduate, better known for stadium work including Allegiant Stadium and Chase Center; he continues to run MANICA Architecture from Kansas City.8
Ownership is held under the Exit Strategy group. Contemporary coverage of the sibling venue The Mercury Room identifies the Exit Strategy partnership as David Manica, Christian Moscoso, Dominic Petrucci, and Brock Schulte.9 The current Verdigris menu masthead, however, credits Owners: Exit Strategy — David & Noelle Manica only, without listing Moscoso, Petrucci, or Schulte.4 The same narrowing appears on the current menus of both sibling bars, which suggests a restructuring of the partnership rather than a Verdigris-specific change. ****
The 2026 operating team listed on the menu is Bennett Hofer (director of operations), Andrew Dervin (general manager), Abigail Lee (head bartender), Aubrey Hunt (assistant manager), and Brodric Yount (assistant head bartender).4 An earlier head bartender, Adam Chase, was credited with the spring/summer program in 2021.10
The bar’s own site now describes it as coming “from the creators of The Monarch Bar, The Mercury Room & Jade Jaguar,” indicating a fourth venue in the group.5 Jade Jaguar has no Registry page yet — ****
Independence: no chain, franchise, or out-of-market corporate parent has been identified. Verdigris is a privately held, locally owned bar operating a single location. As with any private company the full cap table is not public, so treat a strict “no outside capital” claim as ****.

A separate “Spirits + Spirit Free” list (revised February 2026) prices roughly 200 individual pours. Listed prices are for 2oz pours, with an additional charge if the spirit is requested in a cocktail or over a large clear ice cube. Sections: agave (tequila, mezcal, sotol, raicilla), American whiskey (straight bourbon, straight rye), brandy, gin, Irish whiskey, Japanese whisky, scotch (Campbeltown, Highland, Speyside), sugarcane, vodka, aperitif/digestif, liqueurs, and fortified/aromatized wines. Pours run from about $4 to $110, the top end being aged Madeira (D’Oliveiras Terrantez 1988, $90) and comparable rarities. The agave and sugarcane sections are the deepest, and the bar carries its own single barrels (Verdigris Private Barrel from Knob Creek; a La Luna Monarch single-barrel mezcal shared with the sibling bar).
Spirit free4
The published spirit-free section is short — Lagunitas Hoppy Refresher ($5) and Mexican Coke or Sprite ($4) — but five of the cocktails above are marked “available non-alcoholic.” The website’s menu page advertises an “N/A spirits + mocktails” list that is not separately published. ****

Awards
Verdigris is reported to have been voted Best Johnson County Bar in Kansas City magazine’s Best of KC 2026 reader poll. The category exists and the poll is real,11 but the winners list is served by a JavaScript contest app that could not be rendered, and no readable page confirming Verdigris as the winner was located. **** The claim is recorded but not asserted as verified.
Separately, Verdigris did not win in the Johnson County Post’s own 2026 Best of Johnson County Drinks & Bar categories — Best Cocktails went to Drastic Measures and Best Bartender to Jameson Huckaba of Vintage ‘78 Wine Bar (https://johnsoncountypost.com/2026/07/17/this-years-best-of-johnson-county-drinks-bar-winners-2-291713/). The two polls are separate and should not be conflated.
Disputes
- Hours: the Park Place landlord listing and the bar’s own contact page disagree on Saturday and Sunday hours. First-party hours are treated as authoritative. See Operating status.
- Tier consistency across siblings: this page assigns Tier 1 on the same owner-residence evidence that makes the-monarch-cocktail-bar-lounge Tier 1, while the-mercury-room currently sits at Tier 2 on a rationale that predates that evidence. Flagged for a compiler pass; not resolved here.
