Hemma Hemma is Ashley Bare’s health-forward comfort food restaurant at 7122 Wornall Rd in Waldo — a “grandma chic” room where everything is made from scratch, the menu rotates weekly, and the guiding idea is that healthy food can feel like home. Bare is born and raised in Kansas City. After culinary school in NYC and a career as a private chef, she came home during the pandemic and built Hemma Hemma from meal delivery into a full Waldo dining room (opened Sept 2021). A second concept, Hemma Hemma Dinette, opened at 1100 Main St downtown in Feb 2026.
Description
Hemma Hemma is Ashley Bare’s interpretation of what eating well at home feels like — in Swedish, hemma means “at home,” and the Waldo restaurant delivers on that promise through a weekly-rotating menu of scratch-made comfort food built almost entirely on local and seasonal sourcing. Bare grew up in Kansas City, left for culinary school in New York (graduating and taking a position at Mercer Kitchen), built a career as a private chef and recipe developer, then returned to KC during the pandemic and started prepping meals from home for clients. When demand outgrew her house, she found a large space in Waldo and opened the physical restaurant in September 2021. The aesthetic is “grandma chic” — warm, unfussy, deeply familiar — and the food reflects that: no dish repeats itself weekly, no ingredient is wasted. In February 2026, Bare opened Hemma Hemma Dinette at 1100 Main Street downtown in the Lightwell building, a retro diner-style second location expanding the concept to the urban core.
Tier classification
Tier 1 — KC born and raised. Ashley Bare is “born and raised in KC, and it’s the only place I have any close family.”1 After her culinary career took her to New York and then back home, she opened Hemma Hemma as a deliberate homecoming. “I recognized the importance of where you came from.”1 Tier 1 confirmed. Women-owned (specialty tag added).
