Kate’s Kitchen is a small, family-owned breakfast-and-lunch restaurant at 8002 North Oak Trafficway in the Gladstone area of Kansas City’s Northland.¹ It serves classic American breakfast and brunch, making its pancakes, waffles, and biscuits from scratch.² The kitchen is known for hearty, generously portioned diner fare — omelets, stuffed French toast, chicken-fried dishes, and Eggs Benedict variations among them.³ The room is intentionally small and old-fashioned in feel, and a wait for a table is common at peak hours.³

Ownership and history

Kate’s Kitchen is owned by David and Kelly Hendrix and is named for their daughter, Kate.³ The Hendrix family has deep roots in Kansas City–area breakfast dining: David’s father, Ron Hendrix, was a co-founder of the First Watch breakfast chain before selling his interest in it.³ David and Kelly later opened Kate’s Kitchen as an independent diner with a more traditional, old-fashioned character than the chain First Watch became.³ The Hendrixes also operate Ronnie’s Restaurant, a sister breakfast-and-lunch spot in Lenexa, Kansas, named for their son.⁴

According to a May 2009 review in The Pitch, Kate’s Kitchen was about five months old at the time, placing its opening around December 2008.³ (exact founding year/month not confirmed by a primary source.)
