La Cabaña is the family-owned Mexican restaurant on Platte City’s Main Street — 325 Main, a few doors from the county courthouse and from Doni’s, the Italian restaurant that opened up the block in 2026. It took over the space of a predecessor, Las Cabañas, under new owners around the turn of 2021–22, and runs a broad Mexican-American menu: hand-folded enchiladas, sizzling fajita skillets, carnitas, street tacos al pastor, a parrillada for two, and a bar with handcrafted margaritas and house-made horchata. Closed Mondays.

Description

La Cabaña occupies a red-doored storefront at 325 Main St in Platte City’s small downtown, the Platte County seat about 20 minutes north of KCI.¹ The restaurant’s site describes “authentic Mexican cooking, made fresh on Main Street”: hand-folded enchiladas, sizzling fajitas, salsa made in-house, and “a new bar with handcrafted margaritas and house-made horchata.”² The about page frames it as “a family kitchen on Main Street … made the way a family cooks for itself — fresh, unhurried, and a little generous with the cheese,” and promises service where “regulars are remembered and first-timers are made to feel like one.”¹

The menu is long and in the Mexican-American tradition of the region. The site says “Tacos are where La Cabaña built its name” — four-taco plates of tacos callejeros with onion, cilantro and green salsa, or tacos de pastor with chile-and-pineapple pork.³ Around them: a lunch menu until 3 p.m. (chimichanga, carnitas, tamale, chile relleno, huevos con chorizo, a “Speedy Gonzales”), five numbered lunch combos, nachos and quesadillas, entrées such as carnitas, chile verde, chili colorado, enmoladas and a “Special Dinner” sampler, a fajita section topped by a $43.75 Parrillada Mexicana for two and a molcajete mix, seafood (brocheta shrimp, seafood fajitas), ribeye plates, a vegetarian combo list, kids’ plates and à la carte.³ The bar list is margaritas by the glass, jumbo, 32-ounce to-go cup and pitcher, plus beer, wine and a handful of mixed drinks; alcohol is dine-in only.³ Full-menu catering — fajita bars, taco trays — is offered for events.²¹

Ownership and history

The restaurant calls itself “Family Owned Since 2021.”¹ Neighbors on Nextdoor fill in the transition: a June 2022 recommendation said the restaurant had opened “approximately six months” earlier, that “new owners” had taken over from the previous restaurant in the space, and that “Victoria, one of the owners, was absolutely wonderful”; another described it as sitting “in the place of the now closed Las Cabañas.”⁴ That places the changeover around December 2021. Whether the new owners bought the prior business or simply the lease, and whether “La Cabaña” is a rebrand of “Las Cabañas” under the same family, is not documented. The owners’ full names are not published on the site or in any press found; the site’s earlier domain, mexicanrestaurantplattecity.com, now redirects to lacabanaplattecity.com.¹

Main Street Platte City has been filling in around it. Building owner David Barth renovated the former Shirley’s Fashion Center at 339 Main — exposing 1895 brick — for Doni’s Italian Restaurant, which opened in 2026 a few doors north; Bee Creek Bistro reopened at 242 Main and a KC-pride apparel shop took the former Landmark building at 252 Main.⁵ The Kansas City Star’s July 2026 openings column on Doni’s is reported to name La Cabaña as its Main Street neighbor; the article is paywalled and was not retrieved for this page.
