Rápidos Mexican Restaurant is a full-service, scratch-kitchen Mexican restaurant with a margarita bar at 1205 Branch Street (Highway 92) in Platte City, just off Exit 18 of I-29. It opened in September 2020 — mid-pandemic — as the joint venture of chef Erik Marquez, who grew up in his father’s restaurants and cooks a Tex-Mex-inflected traditional menu with his cousin Oscar, and Toni Rauch, a Platte County native who spent most of her career as general manager of Rancho Grande Cantina in Liberty. Puffy tacos, street tacos, quesabirria, sizzling fajita skillets, a pepper-jack-and-spinach house dip, lunch plates all day, and a Cinco de Mayo block party under a tent that has become an annual fixture.

Description

Rápidos stands on Branch Street where Highway 92 meets the I-29 interchange on the east edge of Platte City, sharing its lot line with the Quality Inn; the restaurant’s own pitch to commuters is “the perfect stop on your way home — Exit 18, right off I-29.”12 It describes itself as “a full-service neighborhood restaurant … providing our community with a comfortable, friendly place to dine and socialize,” with a menu “made from scratch daily” and a bar that “will provide one of the best places to get a margarita in town.”3 There is a patio; dine-in, curbside and takeout have run since opening.4

The cooking is Erik Marquez’s — traditional Mexican “infused” with Tex-Mex, learned, he says, by spending “lots of time in the kitchen watching your mom and grandma cook.”4 The Platte County Citizen’s opening-season write-up singled out street tacos, carne asada, fajita burritos, fried tacos, puffy tacos, the chimichanga, the hot salsa and the house dip, with tamales, chile rellenos, corn, mango and habanero salsas and horchata promised.4 Most of those have since arrived: the current menu carries a chile relleno stuffed with beef and cheese, a crispy masa huarache, quesabirria tacos, cantina shrimp tacos, huevos rancheros and huevos con chorizo, a carnitas burrito bowl, and agua de horchata and jamaica, alongside the puffy tacos (deep-fried flour shells) that the owners call “definitely a favorite.”56 Dips are a house specialty — a pepper-jack-and-spinach House Dip, a yellow-cheese Fiesta Dip, and a chorizo-topped version.5 Lunch plates are served all day.5

Cinco de Mayo is the restaurant’s signature event. In 2021 it obtained a city special-event permit for a 10 a.m.–11 p.m. party on the lot between the restaurant and the Quality Inn, with Outlaw Jim and the Whiskey Benders playing under a tent, $3 house margaritas and $17 beer buckets; in 2022 it rented “a huge tent,” booked the same band, ran puffy tacos at half price and gave away beads, koozies and maracas.176 Catering — traditional buffet bars from $7.25 a person in 2022 — serves graduations, weddings and showers.68

Ownership and history

Erik Marquez began working in his father’s restaurants at 14 and had more than 21 years in the business when Rápidos opened; he cooks alongside his cousin Oscar Marquez, who had 24 years.4 “It’s about how to translate that to a restaurant setting where we serve thousands of dishes,” he told the Citizen of the family cooking he grew up on.4 Which restaurants his father ran, and where the family is from, are not recorded.

Toni Rauch grew up ten minutes south of Platte City. She started bartending in college, moved into management, and spent most of her twenty-year career as general manager of Rancho Grande Cantina in Liberty before partnering with Marquez.4 She is the restaurant’s public voice in local press — the Cinco de Mayo planning (“We started planning three months ago … we had to get special permits to entertain outside”), the giveaways, the catering.76 “Rauch and Rapidos co-owner Erik Marquez don’t remember a Cinco de Mayo when they weren’t working,” the Citizen noted in 2021; “If I weren’t working, I would still be here. Just on the other side of the bar.”7

The restaurant opened in September 2020 for dine-in, curbside and takeout, six months into the pandemic, and was profiled by the Citizen the following January.4 The operating company is registered as Rapidos PC LLC.9 The building’s prior tenant is not identified in any source.
