Fetterman’s in Platte City is the original of Scott and Kassie Fetterman’s two-store deli — an 1,800-square-foot shop on NW Prairie View Road that opened on December 20, 2022 with a line out the door, in a town whose dining options had long been the local joke (“Chinese, Mexican and fast food”). Boar’s Head meats and cheeses sliced to order, Liscio’s hoagie rolls shipped from Philadelphia, Reubens, hot pastrami, Italian subs and Philly cheesesteaks, breakfast until 10:30, Messenger Coffee, Blue Bell, and one of the metro’s few kombucha taps, with orders called out by the customer’s name. The Parkville drive-thru store followed in 2025.
Description
The company’s Platte City page: “Fetterman’s redefines what restaurants and delis can offer with premium sandwiches crafted on Liscio’s hoagies and nine bread or wrap options, including gluten-free. Enjoy Reubens, Philly cheesesteaks, or build your own creation from over 20 meats, 11 cheeses, and a selection of 10 veggies and condiments. Breakfast is served daily until 10:30am, and every order arrives just the way you want it — hot or cold … With over 70 chips and 40 sweet treats.” Indoor seating and a patio, catering, party trays and sack lunches; any sandwich on gluten-free bread at no charge; the most popular items are “our Reubens, Philly Cheesesteaks and Italian Sandwich.”1
The Landmark’s account of the store fills in the philosophy. Fetterman “stops short of describing the market’s options as ‘health-food,’” but stocks products with few or no preservatives, nitrates or artificial colors, and attributes the deli’s success to ingredient quality and to customization — “people like to come in and customize. That’s the fun thing about what we offer.” He brings in New York bagels, “chewy on the inside, but crusty on the outside,” and Liscio’s bread from Philadelphia, which East Coast transplants recognize on sight; Blue Bell in a dozen flavors, Messenger Coffee, spring water and Lucky’s Kombucha on tap — “one of a very few Kansas City area locations” pouring it. Gluten-free bread and wraps come with steps against cross-contamination. Early demand forced him to buy faster sandwich-building equipment and to take down the banner advertising the opening.2 Orders are taken by customer name, and staff are trained to “chat it up.”2
Ownership and history
Scott Fetterman grew up in St. Louis and worked a deli counter there at 16; he left the University of Missouri’s business program to sell for Boar’s Head and spent roughly 25 years in the grocery trade, carrying the idea of his own deli the whole way.23 Living in Platte City, he judged the town “ready for a deli and market,” worked 14–16-hour days on the build-out, and opened on December 20, 2022 to a line that “meandered through the Fetterman’s store … and spilled out the door” — “There was nothing soft about it. It was definitely a hard opening.”2 (The student paper places the lease signing on December 12, 2022, a week before opening, which is implausibly tight; the date may be a year off.) His wife Kassie does the marketing; their three sons — one, Nick, quoted as an employee in 2025 — work in the store, and the middle son sells vegetables and pumpkins he grows on Kassie’s parents’ farm near Weston.23 “Suddenly you’re responsible for everything, from pricing products, choosing vendors, managing employees, marketing, bookkeeping, taxes, fixing equipment — all at once,” Scott told the Pirate Press. “Slowly, I learned that I needed to rely on others.”3
After two profitable years the Fettermans opened the larger Parkville store in 2025 (ribbon cutting July 17); Scott has said he hopes to take the brand regional through franchising, and Kassie expects it: “There’s not a lot Scott has said he’d do that he doesn’t.”23 In July 2026 the Star, surveying Platte City’s small dining scene for a report on Doni’s, listed Fetterman’s at 2405 NW Prairie View Road among the options within city limits.4
