Sarah’s On The Hill was a 48-seat comfort-food restaurant and bar at 612 N 5th St in Strawberry Hill, Kansas City, Kansas, opened in 2019 by Sarah Breitenstein in the former Wheat State Pizza space. It was a Breitenstein family venture — the same surname behind breits-stein-and-deli, four blocks down 5th Street — and was later run by Sarah’s brother John. In August 2022 it was sold to Vincent Galicia of Chentes Pizza and renamed Chentes on the Hill. The business no longer trades under the Sarah’s name, so
registry_status: closed. The successor’s own status is doubtful and unresolved — see Current standing.12
Description
Sarah’s On The Hill occupied 612 N 5th St on Strawberry Hill, the bluff neighborhood north of downtown Kansas City, Kansas that was settled by Croatian and Slovenian immigrants and that now holds one of the metro’s densest clusters of independent bars and small restaurants. The room was small — 48 seats including the bar — and took over a former Wheat State Pizza.3
The offer was home-style cooking with a rotating menu: baked pasta, stuffed peppers, pot pie and pizza, with beer, wine and cocktails from the bar.23 Pizza was enough of an anchor that directories still file the address under pizza, and it is the through-line that survived the 2022 sale — the incoming owner explicitly kept the recipes.1
Its 5th Street neighbors include breits-stein-and-deli at 412 N 5th, and the wider Strawberry Hill cluster documented in the Registry runs to johnnies-on-seventh (55 S 7th), sammys-tavern (222 N 6th), fat-matts-vortex (411 N 6th), the-easy-inn (322 N 6th) and, at 204 Orchard, the-mockingbird-lounge and its successor the-blue-palm.
Ownership and history
Founded 2019 by Sarah Breitenstein. Both sources agree on the founder and the year.12 Kansas City Magazine states flatly that “the restaurant was opened by Sarah Breitenstein in 2019.”1
The Breitenstein family connection is the most interesting fact on this page. Kansas City, Kansas’s own visitor bureau, writing in November 2019 under the headline “Family Ties Go with Food in Strawberry Hill,” identifies Sarah Breitenstein as the owner and notes she shares a surname with Breit’s Stein and Deli, which it describes as “owned by the Breitenstein family.”2 Two Breitenstein-run establishments four blocks apart on the same street is a family-business pattern worth documenting properly. The visitor-bureau article does not name Breit’s individual owner. Kansas City Magazine’s Strawberry Hill dive-bar survey elsewhere attributes Breit’s opening in 2002 to Bob Breitenstein; the precise relationship between Bob, Sarah and John Breitenstein is **** and should not be guessed at. See breits-stein-and-deli.
Taken over by John Breitenstein. Kansas City Magazine records that after Sarah opened it, the restaurant “was taken over by her brother John.”1 No date is given for that handover.
Sold August 2022. Reporting dated 2022-08-21: “Sarah’s on the Hill, one of our favorite spots in Strawberry Hill, has been sold to a new owner and is now Chentes on the Hill (612 N. Fifth St., KCK)… Vincent Galicia of Chentes Pizza took over and plans to keep the pizza recipes the same while adding asada and chorizo Mexican pizzas.”1 This is the closure/rename verification for this page. It is a sale and rebrand, not a shutdown — the kitchen kept running under a new owner and a new name, with the pizza recipes carried across and a Mexican-influenced expansion layered on top.
Independence: single location throughout, family-operated, no chain or franchise structure at any point. Chentes Pizza, the acquiring operator, is itself a local KC-area pizza business rather than an out-of-metro parent — though its structure has not been examined for this page.
Menu
Last verified: 2026-08-14 · Source: no first-party surface exists — the only candidate domain, sarahsonthehill.com, has exactly one Internet Archive capture (2021-12-20) and that capture is an expired-domain parking page carrying no content.4 · Confidence: High that no first-party menu is recoverable; the dish names below are confirmed from named press, and no price on this page comes from any source at all.
menu_status: historical — the business stopped trading under this name in August 2022 and left no archived menu of its own. This is a terminal verdict: do not re-spend research time on prices for Sarah’s On The Hill.
Surfaces checked, and the ceiling
- Independent domain —
sarahsonthehill.comdid exist (correcting the 2026-08-13 finding that the business “appears never to have had one”), but the Wayback Machine holds a single capture, dated 2021-12-20, of a Tucows expired-domain parking page: “This domain has expired.” No pre-expiry capture of any page exists, so nothing first-party survives.4 Variantssarahsonthehillkc.com,sarahsonthehill.net,www.sarahsonthehill.com— zero Archive captures. - Facebook / Instagram — no archived captures for any
facebook.com/sarahsonthehill*orinstagram.com/sarahsonthehill*path. - Ordering platforms — no Toast, Square, Clover, ChowNow or Menufy storefront located under the business name or domain.
- Feast Magazine — the 429 wall lifted; a third article (2019-06-10, the opening piece) was retrieved in full and is the source of the dish detail below. It carries no prices.5
- Visit Kansas City KS blog — dish categories and hours, no prices.2
- Aggregators (Grubhub, Seamless, Caviar, DoorDash, SinglePlatform, MenuPix, Restaurantji, Yelp, TripAdvisor) — all carry menus and prices for this address. All excluded under the first-party-only pricing rule. Restaurantji serves the successor’s content from a
sarahs-on-the-hillURL path — an identity smear that makes aggregator pricing here unusable in principle as well as in policy.
What the restaurant served (press-sourced, unpriced — not a menu)
Deliberately presented as prose, not as a priced item list, because no first-party menu was recovered. All prices are **** and are expected to remain so permanently.
At opening the restaurant was open for lunch and served “classic sandwiches, salads, pizza and a handful of baked dishes, including stuffed peppers and baked pastas.”5 Named sandwiches: Buffalo chicken and chicken Caesar wraps, a turkey croissant and a French dip.5 Pizza was make-your-own or one of a few specialties, of which one is described by the operator’s press coverage: the Charlie Ryan — “fresh garlic, shredded chicken, tomato, red onion, sliced green olives, a generous amount of bacon, mozzarella and a drizzle of olive oil.”5 The later profile adds pot pie to the baked dishes and confirms beer, wine and cocktails at the bar.2 The successor operator added asada and chorizo Mexican pizzas after the 2022 sale.1
No other dish description on this page may be extended, paraphrased into a new item, or attached to a price.
Disputes
- Opening month, 2019 — RESOLVED 2026-08-14. Feast Magazine’s February 2019 piece announced a March opening; the November 2019 Visit Kansas City KS article said “summer of 2019.”32 The Feast opening article of 2019-06-10, retrieved 2026-08-14, closes the gap: the restaurant opened in June 2019 “following a few weeks of equipment-related delays.”5 The March date was a target that slipped. No longer in dispute.
- Predecessor at the address. “Former Wheat State Pizza location” traces to Feast headline-and-summary material. The opening article, now read in full, does not mention any predecessor business — so this claim is still unsourced. Provisional. ****
- Breitenstein family structure. Sarah (founder), John (her brother, later operator) and Bob (credited with opening Breit’s Stein and Deli in 2002) share a surname and a street. The exact relationships are not established. Do not infer them.
- Successor status. Chentes on the Hill: Yelp-closed versus directory-open. Unresolved, see Current standing.
