Texas Tom’s on Prospect is a carryout window at 6950 Prospect Avenue on Kansas City’s east side, run by Ali Nazam, whose brief 2015 attempt at a second Texas Tom’s on Troost is the best-documented episode in the modern history of the name. It keeps the longest hours of any Texas Tom’s in Missouri — 10 a.m. to 1:30 a.m., 2:30 on Thursdays and Fridays — and sells the family’s board of double junior cheeseburgers, wings, chili dogs, chili-cheese tots and catfish through a service window behind thick Plexiglas, “made to order — always fresh.” It carries the name of Tom Nigro’s 1953 chain, whose 26 stores were sold in 1983 and whose survivors are now independently run.

Description

The store is on Prospect Avenue at about 70th Street, on the south-east side of the city. It is built for carryout: The Pitch in 2015 described customers ordering “through an employee behind thick Plexiglas,” and Nazam himself said “the Prospect restaurant does mostly carryout business.”1 The official site promises “made to order — always fresh and healthy food,” free parking, a kids’ menu and vegetarian options, and categorizes the cooking as American, Mediterranean and Mexican — which is the Texas Tom’s board in three words.2 Hours run past 1:30 a.m. every night and 2:30 on Thursdays and Fridays, the latest of the Missouri units.23

The site’s featured items are the Kids Cheeseburger Basket, the 5-piece Wings Combo, the Chili Dog Combo, the Double Junior Cheeseburger and Tots with Chili & Cheese; the 2015 Troost menu, run by the same owner, added burgers, Italian steaks, tacos, gyro sandwiches, hot dogs, whole fried catfish dinners, hot wings, a seafood basket and the Buck-a-roo Basket — hamburger, taco, burrito, fries and three onion rings.21 Reviews are mixed and thin: Restaurantji holds 147 at 2.9 stars, Yahoo Local 16 at 3.0 with the wings (“well-seasoned and huge”) and chili dog praised and order accuracy faulted, and Yelp files the unit under “Chicken Wings.”435

Ownership and history

The chain. Tom Nigro created Texas Tom’s in 1953; the first store, at 8401 Winner Road, was conceived as an ice-cream shop and briefly called Frigid Cream, and by the 1983 sale the chain numbered 26 stores in and around the metro.6 Since then the name has been carried by independent operators — the Chaudhris on Linwood, unnamed owners on Independence Avenue, in KCK and in Independence — rather than a single company; who bought the chain in 1983 and how the name was parceled out is not documented. The full lineage is on the 7th & Quindaro page.

This store. Ali Nazam is the only Texas Tom’s operator besides the Chaudhris to be named in press. By May 2015 he owned the Prospect Avenue store — The Pitch called it “a Texas Tom’s franchise,” without saying franchised from whom — and on May 22, 2015 he opened a second Texas Tom’s at 3360 Troost in the former Teeshia’s Taste Cafe, with indoor seating the Prospect store lacked and 10-to-10 hours.1 It lasted two months. Closing it in August, Nazam blamed the reopened Linwood store (texas-toms-linwood): “I didn’t realize that the other Texas Tom’s on Linwood, which is less than a mile away, would take so much of the business.” The Prospect store continued.7 When it opened, and whether Nazam still owns it, is not documented; the official site carries no history or owner name, and directories list an older phone number than the site does.23
